Leonardo Di Caprio and Martin Scorsese were the guests of honour at the opening of the seventh Marrakech Film Festival. The American Oscar winning director heaped praise on his 33-year-old compatriot with whom he has completed three films as he presented him with a Golden Star Award.
Scorsese has shot several of his films in Morocco and after the presentation he gave the audience a well-received lesson in cinema. The Moroccan writer and director, Hassan Benjelloun, described it as wonderful: "In the end, we basically all have the same issues, the same anxieties, even when you've got a massive budget, the director always has the same fears and worries."
Over the next week films from 15 countries will compete for the festival's top Gold Star award and 100 years of Egyptian cinema will also be celebrated.
