HRH Crown Prince Moulay Rachid backs journalists to tell story of hunger and poverty

Rabat, May 22, 2008 -- His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Rachid’s dedication to highlighting hunger and poverty-related emergencies has helped raise the awareness of the Harry Chapin Media Award (HCMA).

Offering distinction and prestige to independent and mainstream journalists, Crown Prince Moulay Rachid as a President of Marrakech International Film Foundation together with Euromed Audiovisual II Program by European Union has sponsored the HCMA.

Crown Prince Moulay Rachid’s support for the award will further honor journalists for their exemplary work and dedication on issues of hunger and poverty on a local, national and global level.

The Harry Chapin Media Awards, formerly the World Hunger Media Awards, were created in 1982 to encourage the media to tell the story of hunger and poverty. This includes work on economic inequality and insecurity, unemployment, homelessness, domestic and international policies and their reform, community empowerment, sustainable development, food production, agriculture, nutrition and the struggle for land.

An independent panel of judges, rewarding the best in hunger and poverty journalism, chose the winners of the 2007 Harry Chapin Media Awards.

The finalists for 2007 are:

Periodicals : "The Ugly Side of Micro-Lending" by Keith Epstein and Geri Smith (BusinessWeek); "Prisoners Dilemma" by Jarrett Murphy (City Limits Investigates); and "Ethanol's Deadly Brew" by Michael Smith and Carlos Caminada (Bloomberg Markets).

TV/Film : Lumo by Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt and Nelson Walker III (POV/PBS); In Debt We Trust by Danny Schechter and Robert Manning (Global Vision and AltaVista); Empty Lots, Empty Promises by Toni Guinyard (KCET-TV); and Rightful Yet Right-Less by Juliana Tafur (Evansion Cable).

Newspaper : "Poverty Peddlers" by Jason Grotto and Scott Hiaasen (The Miami Herald); "The Fight For Sugar Hill" by Paul Meyer and Melanie Burford (The Dallas Morning News); "Skid Row Stories" by Anat Rubin (Daily Journal); "No Relief" by Donald G. McNeil Jr. (The New York Times); and Africa Series by Lydia Polgreen (The New York Times).

Book : The Missing Class by Katherine Newman and Victor Tan Chen (Beacon Press); Nobodies by John Bowe (Random House); Sick by Jonathan Cohn (HarperCollins); and Closing the Food Gap by Mark Winne (Beacon Press).

Radio : "The Invisible: Children Without Homes" by Bob Edwards (The Bob Edwards Show/XM Satellite Radio). Finalists in the Photojournalism category will be announced in May.

HRH Crown Prince Moulay Rachid engages Moroccans in a new global message of cross-cultural understanding

Marrakech, May 22, 2008 -- Determined to strengthen an integral of Marrakech city’s cultural richness and diversity, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Rachid continues to embark on an ambitious Marrakech International Film Festival (MIFF), which will be held from November 14th to 22nd 2008.

Crown Prince Moulay Rachid as a leading patron of building new Morocco, and to enhance the development of all stages, stressed that promotion of the cultural heritage, which the nations share, is a matter that must be a concern of every part of the globe.

Crown Prince Moulay Rachid pointed out that the MIFF continues its drive of great international meeting of cinema under the emblem of the festivity, openness and professionalism.

The MIFF Foundation - organizer of the event chaired by Crown Prince Moulay Rachid - also announced Monday that the website entirely dedicated to the MIFF will be operational from July 1st, 2008 at the following address: www.festivalmarrakech.info.

La 8ème édition du Festival International du Film de Marrakech (FIFM) se tient cette année du 14 au 22 novembre 2008.

Organisé par la Fondation du Festival International du Film de Marrakech que préside Son Altesse Royale le Prince Moulay Rachid, le FIFM continue ainsi sur sa lancée de grand rendez-vous international du cinéma sous le signe de la fête, de la convivialité et du professionnalisme.

Marrakech, May 11, 2008 – Morocco’s leading Marrakech International Film Festival is now accepting submissions for its 8th edition, November 14-22, 2008.

The submission deadline for selection purposes is October 13th, 2008.
